Drowning Facts

  • Nationwide, more than 300 children under five years old drown annually.
  • 65% of drownings usually occured in a pool owned by the child's family. 35% occurred in a friend's or relative's pool .
  • At the time of the accident, most victims were being supervised by one or both parents.
  • Drowning can occur quickly and silently. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer the phone. A majority (75%) of the victims had been "out of sight" for five minutes or less.
